Today, we want to explain things simply so that you can understand better. We'll show you how these big brain-like computer programs, called Large Language Models (LLMs), can do cool things in an easy way.

### So, what is LLM (Large Language Model)? Let's talk about LLM first.

LLMs are like super smart computer programs. They can answer questions, make summaries, tell stories, or even write poems. They work like magic through chatting. You type in a question, and they quickly give you an answer.

OpenAI's ChatGPT is an example of an LLM. It's like you're having a chat with a really speedy helper. But remember, it's not a real person – it's more like a parrot that mimics words without truly understanding.

### So, What’s the Challenge here?

OpenAI's most recent update about LLMs was in September 2021. This brings up a challenge – how can we add new information to these LLMs? And a lot of times, people are curious about how these language models can know private things about them.

And that's where Llamaindex comes in to help!

## ****Introducing the Llama Index — The Game Changer****

Llama Index, formerly known as GPT Index, intends to offer an easy, fast, and inexpensive way to connect LLMs with your private data. The project adopts an approach similar to SQL databases. It begins with the raw data stored in a database, defines various indexes or views on top of the data, and provides a query interface to interact with the database.

In line with this, Llama Index focuses on structuring your data in a way that facilitates retrieval for usage with LLMs. This enables developers to build a stateful service that integrates with your data sources, providing an interface to ask questions or instruct the LLM to do something with the stored state.

### ****Benefits of Integrating LLM with Your Data****

The integration of LLMs with your data provides substantial benefit to app developers.

With LMMs, you can simplify the process of dealing with unstructured data. For instance, you can take text from a PDF document or an HTML webpage and simply dump it into the LM input prompt. You then ask the model a question related to the data — even if the data is in a messy, unstructured format, the LMM can answer.

Another unique advantage of LM integration with your data is the further reduced need for traditional Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) and data pipelining. With LMMs' power, you can store unstructured text in its raw form then retrieve, parse, and query it in wanted formats. This means creating an intelligent natural language interface that simplifies data processing.

## ****The Llama Index: Data Ingestion, Indexing, and Query - 3 Levels of integrating.****

Building this stateful service with Llama Index relies on processing three components: **data ingestion, indexing, and then querying**. The data ingestion stage involves integrating data from numerous services. Subsequently, the indexing phase structures your data to facilitate its retrieval for usage with LLMs. Lastly, in the query phase, indexes guide the retrieval of data to be synthesised by LLMs.

To further generate deeper insights, Llama index incorporates methods like chaining of repeated LMM calls on sequential chunks of data, leading to a more precise answer.

Remember, it all revolves around designing an ultimate system that allows easy input to LLMs and offers a prolific output, adding value to your data exponentially.

### ****Understanding the Data Pipeline in LLM Applications****

There are three fundamental steps when building an LLM application; data ingestion, indexing, and then querying. Once you successfully ingest a document (be it a PDF document or data from an API) into the Llama Index, the next step is to chunk up the text into text chunks. The goal at this stage is to make the data more manageable.

The chunks are then stored, either within a vector database such as Pinecone or Weaviate, or a document store such as MongoDB. Next is defining some structure over this data, and this is where indices come into play. An index offers a simplified view of your data. A basic structure would involve adding an embedding to each text piece.

### ****What is Vector and Vector Database?****

A vector, in mathematical terms, is an object that has both magnitude and direction. It's represented by an ordered list of numbers. In the context of machine learning and data science, vectors are used to represent data as it can be easily manipulated and computed.

### ****What is Embeddings ?****

Embeddings are condensed representations of a piece of content, stored as vectors (or strings) of numbers. The length of the vector can vary; you could have 100 or 1000 numbers, depending on the specific embedding model. When you input some text content into the model, it assigns it an embedding. This string of numbers is closer to strings representing similar content and farther away from strings representing distinct content. So think of it as a way of measuring the semantic similarity of different pieces of content.

Back to indices – a vector index is an example where an embedding is added to each piece of text. However, there are other ways to define indices for your data. Take, for instance, a keyword table; it's a mapping from keywords to the underlying text. There's also the flat list index where you store a subset of node IDs. The kind of index you choose will largely depend on the nature of questions you aim to ask of your data.

In machine learning, an embedding is indeed comprised of vectors.

Here's a simple way to think about it: let's say we have an embedding for words in a language. Each word is represented by a vector in a specified dimension. For example, in a 300-dimensional embedding, the word "computer" might be represented by a 300-dimensional vector. The numbers in this vector are learned parameters that help the model understand the semantics and usage of the word "computer".

In this sense, the embedding is a mapping from words to vectors, and each word corresponds to a specific vector in the embedding space.

### ****What Is Llama Index?****

At its core, Llama Index is designed to harness the raw power of language models by providing an efficient and easily navigable query interface. This framework is designed to effectively retrieve and process data from large language models. The tool supports certain use cases for each index, making distinctions between fact-based queries and summary-based questions, for example.

Remember, though, that Llama Index is not a vector store or a storage system, a fact that distinguishes it from many vector store providers. While the latter are more focused on the storage of unstructured documents, Llama Index aims to expose a broader range of query interfaces.

Llama Index provides a diverse set of abstractions and tools to manage your interaction with language models and your data. It essentially performs as a data orchestrator on top of your existing storage solutions. Through Llama Index, users are provided with more advanced query interface capabilities.
